Year before last, a fellow plot holder had some problems with his brassicas, especially his Swedes. His gardening book suggested that shortages of boron and molybdenum were to blame. Bit of research on the 'net suggested a readily available source of both was wood-ash. Last year - magnificent crops.

I only use artificial fertilisers on my tubs of flowers. Completely unnecessary on my vegetable patches or the allotment.

I remember that as a farm student we put 'Nitro-chalk on the grass fields as the first top dressing 21% N and subsequent dressing after were of 'Nitram' 31% N, of amonium nitrate. The nitrochalk I think was a 30-10-10, and the nitram a straight fertiliser. They used to say the nitrochalk would help raise the ph of the soil nearer to 6.5, with some liming effect, but they also preached that most nutrients were best released in slightly acid conditions. All I work on now is that fresh FYM will grow a decent crop of spuds and a follow up crop of brassicas,to which I add a bit of lime!
