Maybe it's November, but you'd never know it. Not here, anyway.

Today I've harvested two bulbs of fennel, not for us but to give to the chaps on neighbouring plots (in return for which I've already had useful advice and a bag of huckleberries), the last of the courgettes (dug the buggers up to make sure of that), a carrier bag full of runner beans, some mooli, Jerusalem artichokes, turnips and celery. That's to go with the parsnip, carrots, cabbage and leaf beet from earlier in the week. The spring onions and lettuce, which ought to be looking more sad by now, are still right as rain. Oh, one of the worktops in the kitchen is buried under tomatillos.

Shirtsleeve weather for working out in today. Lovely day.

blimey my ickle veggie plot is strictly on overwintering stuff now though I noticed the grass is still growing strongly and I don't think we've had a heavy frost here yet. It looks like cool nights and single figure days for the upcoming week tho'

Well it's actually been a bit cold here today, still not had a frost yet. Rather a nice day though, sun out and no rain for once.

I've mulched several plants to help them through the winter. Cleared an area for Bugs to finally get our garlic in. We had trouble getting bulbs this year as most garden centres stock Christmas tat rather than anything plant related at this time of year. Still we have 9 bulbs (three lots of three different types) of garlic broken up into cloves and planted.

I've also tried to insulate the worm rich compost bin. They are still very active and the bin is in a sheltered spot but as there are so many of them I've added a thick layer of fresh material and surrounded the compost container with old bags. I would use an old pillow but not sure which way round their head are.

I dug out several buckets of compost for the garlic patch and it's very good stuff.

we had our first frost last night. I am a little concerned as the overwintering onions, the garlic and the peas are bigger than i would normally like them to be. i think now there has been a frost they will all slow right down.

Had a bit of a ground frost this morning. I think we'd had one other light frost, a bit more to this one, though. I've brought the bay tree in now, it's in a pot because our bay used to die ever winter in our garden in Gateshead, I must've bought four or five over the years up there. Do you guys rekon one would survive outdoors here in Cambridge?

Bay is hardy down to 5/-15 if that helps. Keep it out of the cold or freezing wind, though, as the leaves will become affected then. The bigger it gets, the hardier it will become. Mine stays out in the ground all winter now with no problems, about 5ft tall.

I've never had a problem with bays either, down to -11C here. I don't think they will like too much wind or being kept too wet though.

My bay is fine too, it sits in a pot in a sheltered corner of the garden.
