Over the past few days my internet connection seems to have been eating data at an alarming rate. I've not been downloading software or watching videos or anything else that would easily explain it and I am fairly sure that nobody is feeeloading on my WiFi. Is there any kind of software that can keep tabs on what pages are using what data? Or any other way of keeping tabs on things?

run malwarebytes (free)

run spybot and then set the immunisation (free)

get avast home premium (about �40 a year for 3 machines and some smartphones thrown in) run a full scan on activation and subsequently now and again just to make sure.

it sounds like you got infected with something.kill it asap ,it is likely to be a bot if it is eating bandwidth but it might have harvested data as well so changing passwords and checking any money stuff is safe would be sensible

for general band use ttb Meter (free)will log up and down traffic and if set will warn you if you exceed your limit and give an indication of traffic you did not initiate (i set mine to half my limit to give early warning and see how much i still have in the last week of the month and use that for downloading large document files or transferring data to storage.

ahh ,in which case the linux forum might have some clues as to the the best way to proceed

Quite possibly.
The answers here will still be of use: I do sometimes use Windows, though not so often on a metered connection.

iirc ttb meter has a linux version

If you use facebook it will download videos even if you don't watch them. My mobile data allowance got hit with that when the other half started using it on her phone. There is a setting somewhere I believe to switch it off.
