it is sunday, bin day was last friday, excavations into sammison stores have been backfilled for the last 3 days

bird food has been in short supply for ratty

about an hour ago ratty was digging for stores when i went out and she decided to go for deep cover
out in daylight indicates a bit short of food or over confident(drinking in daylight probably means somebody poisoned it)

i know folk exaggerate about the size of rats but she is a big un, nose to arse about 9 inch and maybe 3/4 of a pound to a pound, bit plump at the mo

she might be pregnant, i need to get her first before that happens

time to pin the smoked salmon in clingfilm above the fenn in the box

if i dont get her now i will have to do "support company" on the entire colony

she has disrupted my wildlife studies big time, the hound is not happy and the sammisons both want and expect me to execute action against the invading ogre

ps i know where she lives and where she hangs out and i could get very nasty with area denial(see chilli pepper mix, strobes etc) but a direct approach means the surviving sammison, mr youngi, could move back to the family estate.
i have a feeling that ratty might have eaten mikki and her babies

in the past i have been fine with eviction or death, this one tis death if possible but i would settle for eviction into the tender care of a JRT, pig pen* or strange ratpack

*a sty full of pigs are a very competent support company if evicted rats are directed through their killing zone

PS i can get caddyshack psychopath on rats if they are a problem, i also really like them as chums and respect their abilities
odd, bit the same with foxes:roll:

the best/only? way to get the smoked salmon pinned in cling film to the "roof" of the two draws is to stand on the trap

accidents can happen even if you are trap wary

this one is smarter than the average rat, she was displaced as an adult and knows a few things

caddyshack is an ace training film

Hope Mikki and the babies have just evacuated for the moment. Good luck catching the rat.

update on vermin pt 2, i have two bites on my arm that look like argentinian ant bites, more hunting, this time with sugar and brazing flux when i can find the colony, hummm?
we did the whole street of about 50 houses at the front a couple of years ago and got all the colonies nodes

amazing critters, perfect for the pampas but very rough on uk invertebrate wildlife as well as aggressive and rather bitey for a tiny beast

i would give them a schott2 rating for damage

sherry and medals for me
traps never sleep
now i can start feeding the birds again, i have missed them, and they me(or my restaurant)

hopefully the sammison clan will return soon as well
and a small regret as i rather like rats as pals although not as vermin
it was quick as it got it at the right angle and distance

now i need to find gloves, my huge antique turnscrew and bit of wood to extract the fallen which is a bit nasty and slightly dangeroos both mechanically and as a biohazard

Nice one DPack. I bet that's a relief for you.

Fingers crossed on the mice returning. Nasty, big bully rats.

Be careful with removing the fallen and remember, no man left behind.

no man left behind is one of my advantages if i am shooting them

ditto if somebody else poisoned it with something well nasty and i stuff the victim into a nest effective but not nice.

poison is horrible but "war is hell" etc

this one had fair warning with a hosepipe, light show and chilli that should be at porton

hopefully it will be awhile before the next decides to pirate my little chum's benefits

"Nice one DPack. I bet that's a relief for you. "

the result was inevitable but it is rather good to feel order can now be restored

took a while, this one was well resourced from sammison stores and cautious until the only options were a green potato in the compost or try the cheesy seeds stuck to and around the fenn in a box

a little over 3 weeks for an assassination of an individual is about par

if there are many trapping is an everyday thing for emptying and rebaiting

i have a few snaps(pun intended)and will do a "how to set a fenn4"post

they are rather "exciting"to set, i still have a scar and bend from my one mistake

it is not nice murdering a critter as vermin if it might be a chum you never knew

it was vermin so i channelled my inner psychopath

at least i did no get full caddyshack on it:lol:
another week and it might have been very messy.
i missed my birdy and mousy chums.

Can be hard when you have to choose mates..on the other hand, disease carrying is not good

"hopefully it will be awhile before the next decides to pirate my little chum's benefits"

that lasted a little over an hour

nuke time, i will get the second fenn into use in daylight

it is plausible there are several more beyond the half size one i saw while being smug

none were born here since the one a day thing a few years ago

much as i like em at the mo i hate rats

Not a lot. Pity a Fenn trap can't be used on some of the present lot. Of course Sammisons can carry disease, but not as bad as rats, and on the whole rather nicer. Too many can still cause trouble though. Think by the gnaw marks I have something living in or around the veg patch, but not too much damage, so can live with it at the moment. The local cats patrol for me, but don't seem very effective.
