in the end mother nature will right itself some how even if it means getting rid of most of the population of the earth at the time

you can't fool mother nature though we try so very hard

yes i think perhaps man is doomed in his present form

when? i dont' know, i think not in my lifetime but perhaps my great, great grandchildren's .......that doesn't stop me from doing my bit but i do sometimes why i bother.......i suppose it is in my make up to do so as it is in the make up of others not to.

the forces of nature will win in the end....you can see that by the various natural disasters that overcome parts of the planet every now and again......we mess it up and mother nature tells us to back off....we don't and one day it will take over...it'll be our fault not mother nature's

But hang on Old Hibberd - are you saying green policies, downsizers, ecowarriors, and generally considerate types are making the situation WORSE by eeking out the oil?

Should we all go on a huge bender to prevent a fatal delay of the crisis?

Definitely, and I can't see what getting depressed about it will achieve, try your best, learn, listen, educate, but don't go running around in a panic.

The excellent article written by Jeremy Leggett in the Independent plays down his current job... CEO at solarcentury. At present they are investing heavily in new solar technologies and integrated Solar PV and Solar Thermal tiles and are on a large recruitment drive.
He knows there's a problem because of his previous job in the oil industry but is doing something about it.
Alternatives are going to be the future... Lets not all get too depressed about all of this and change our habits by encorporating some form of renewable energy on our houses and start to make the difference.

Um.. Well yes. That does appear to be one take on the situation.

I'm am trying to not get depressed about it, but I don't share Nanny's opinion on the timescale. It seems it could be a lot sooner than our grandchildren's problem. And I don't think we'll be able to 'technology' our way out if it either.

First of all my own view is that we shouldn't wait for oil & gas to run out before using other freely available sources of energy. It seems daft to just burn oil when it has so many uses, a bit like throwing bundles of cash on a fire to keep warm.

What I don't understand is that many ecconomists are not worried by peak oil and I heard that the majority of scientists beleive man is not responsible for the majority of global warming.

Global warming and running out of oil , separate issues.

Which one is going to wipe out the human race seems open to infinite debate, until it happens.

I think a lot of people are worried by peak oil. BUT it seems its a self fulfilling prophecy, even admitting there is a problem could be liable to set off the chain reaction which finishes us off.

Hi everyone, this is my first post although I have been reading for some time.
I think our worlds major problem is the size of population and it is this size that will probably trigger Mother Natures re-balance. You only have to look at intensive farming to see what happens when too many animals are housed in too little space. If the current bird flue was to mutate and pass from human to human it would surely spread around the world at an alarming rate due to the speed with which we can travel.
My view on the depleting oil situation is that we will probably see more wars for control of reserves, we will rely more on nuclear, which will carry its own threat to the world, we will have to farm by traditional organic methods possibly without as much mechanical assistance and trade betwean countries will be less. This possible lowering of food prodution will have an impact on world population and if global warming really messes up the weather we may well see African style famine in Europe and America. But whatever happens in the future I think it will result in a drastic reduction in the human population but I doubt very much that we will become extinct, maybe just get set back a few hundred or thousand years.
I think the best that we can do is to learn to provide as much for ourselves as possible.
Regards and stay happy
Trevor
