We call this an 'earth burn' in the UK. It is still being done, but mainly as a demonstration and to keep the tradition alive. Having been involved in one from start to finish and another one through part of the burn, I don't think I would want to be involved on a regular basis. Charcoal burning is dirty, hard work, and confusing enough even using either a ring kiln or retort kiln, so going back to earth burns on a regular basis would not be a good idea except in the circumstances they find themselves in in Cuba with plenty of manpower and very little resources. In addition, it produces a lot of smoke and in these days when we are told particulates are evil, I can't see it going down well here.
Not at my brightest and best as we were firing a retort kiln in the pouring rain yesterday; it was being particularly cussed, and son got called home as his wife had a bad fall, then husband had to go and take his car to him leaving me to look after the kiln, which was suffering from temperature drop, with virtually no stoking wood. Ended up getting home about 11 pm. DIL seems to have broken a small bone in her foot, and last heard couldn't put any weight on it. As she already has mobility problems, son is currently having to look after her. |
