my new hood is a perfect shape to go over the sheep hat and oil skin coat

at the mo it is dark blue(sort of ok)

it would be better a bit more earthy and perhaps "patterned"

as it is fireproof i recon a wash is in order before i make it waterproof

tt thinks the coat brown, i say earthy dark green

i should get the hood thing washed and dyed before i dress it and the coat in the posh thorn proof and wax greases

goretex is ok but i seem to outlive the stuff which is annoying

black, dark green and dark brown tie dye in 3 after a first hit of bleach/wax might work

i would not want to use it as ppe with a gas axe, as a rain hood it may be perfect

i have a small sample of draw cord to use as test material

test one is in, sodium metabisulphate, result no bleaching

test two is getting chlorine from domestic bleach, if it works the treat to wash times matter

the stuff looks a bit like indigo, but is probably not plant derived

i hoped a simple azo breaker would make pale bits
hey ho, if domestic chlorine bleach is wimpy i could try chloronitric or other bleaches of vigour

You may get unwanted holes instead of bleaching?

i suspect the fire proof coating(do not wash etc) was preventing both types of bleach from getting into the fibres

i gave it a good wash and then dyed it from blue(mao suit and school pinafore frock from the 70's sort of blue)

single lake with a series of colours added over time
first was yellow, then patchy maroon, then patchy brown, then let it sit in the mixed dye lake for a few more hours

it just came out of a final spin, a subtle colour pattern that is rather unnoticeable and close enough to the coat shades to not look really odd as a rain hat once it is waxed and oiled

tis a bit hard to tell until it is dry and oiled, but it seems to have worked

sequential additions to the lake and or directly to twisted fabric can be quite effective

for an even effect with one or multiple dyes, lots of stirring in a big dye lake is best, this is not that

if overdying a strong colour use about 3 times as much dye for the wt of fabric than the packet says
that can be sequential or a single big dose of one colour, a bit might be wasted when it has taken as much as it can but it will give decent coverage

if you want soft pastel shade start with white cloth

as i am domestic i tend to use dylon stuff, my inclination would lean towards a full on dye house choice of chemicals or the horse piss and indigo type of textile art kit

i had better tie it on otherwise i will never find it

now it is dry it is still a bit blue with earthy overtones

i could give it more dye but i dont think it will take much more

good enough and it will probably tone down with dressing and age
