I think this is entirely the wrong section and possibly forum, but has anyone here ever tried making fire with any "traditional" techniques?

I think I've managed it with a magnifying glass and a mirror (and then I started the fire lighting, boom boom) but wondered if any one technique is easier than another. Just for fun, and you never know when it might be useful.

Erm, yeah, if you want.

Isn't there a method where you rub their legs together to keep warm?

Yeah. I think Baden-Powell's 'Scouting for Boys' was the first book to describe it.

I can use flint and steel (no, not a lighter- I know its the same principle!) and a fire drill, and I know someone who managed to do the tin can and bar of chocolate trick with their young archaeology club when they did a firemaking challenge.

Flint and steel does work for me. Very slow though. Have tried to do the rubbing stick in hole in rotten log with bow(dead clear) method and could only get it to work using a mix of potassium permanganate and sugar in the hole. That was slow! Those manufactured flints work easily with a decent blade. Magnifying glass works for me also (but only about two weeks a year!)
