there was a grey squirrel in a mature black locust tree this aft. they got here a few hundred years apart but don't look good together the wee beasty was near invisible on a mature trunk's nooks n crannies

Perhaps that is how they are meant to be. Come the polecats, we may have fewer grey squirrels.
