i am trying to get my lappy going again after a few months "rest" and me using linux for all the usual stuff.
the contrast is considerable.

with the lappy so far:

2 starts and a restart to get it to talk to the wifi again(new router so i cant entirely blame bill for that)

one restart:
to get it to update avast which it is doing at the mo

im now trying to stop it doing a back up while i update the os,it's security patches defender etc (ah ha sorted for the mo) and to stop it trying to update the ms stuff til avast is sorted

once avast has updated i will need to patch and update the os and restart it again

then i might be able to access a couple my data bases,my colleagues data base and a couple of passwords i need to transfer a load of data to where i can use it a small bit at a time

compared to linux which is fast ,hardware requirement light,secure,easy to update when i want to rather than every time i turn the machine on,etc etc a microsoft os and all the bits it requires to be safely usable is messy.

spose at least it hasn�t updated itself to 10 and trashed the machines usability like just happened to sil

hey ho a restart to install the avast updates now. i wonder what will be next in line ,recon it might actually be the microsoft stuff

no it is now trying to connect to yahoo/chrome which i never use and skype dropbox which i do but prefer to activate when i want them

sorted

avast is now up and running for rtp but suggests a scan which seems sensible as the thing seems to have called everything it knows to try to update itself .

run smart scan.

a bit over an hour so far to get to starting a scan ,to be continued.....

it has been on 6% for a while but it might be just doing it's thing so i will leave it for a bit before i try to find why there seems to be no progress . fluffy clouds,ice cream,kittens ,grrrrrrr.

Not a lot can be said really, you are already in the Linux camp. Any time I am forced to use windows, I get the same thing, its slow insecure and immensely aggravating. It is such a shame that the Linux desktop has not managed to make the final effort to simplify and remove the remaining hurdles to making Linux totally easy.

Been trying to upgrade a win 7 pc to win 10 for a week now, it fails because it can't download updates. Tried every fix I can find on the internet, no joy

I have fallen out of love with Ubuntu, I think it lost its way with the Unity Desktop. Mint seems to get good reviews.

I was initiallly on mint, sons moved me to studio. very happy with both

mint is quite instinctive and seems stable

after about 6 hrs i retrieved access to a data base i needed (and face book which i loath but need for the orchard thing) and changed the passwords to something i can remember so as i can use them on this

all i need to do now is transfer 4 massive data files to here which might need quite a bit of work to make sure all the file names are ok to burn or drop box and the lappy is then only needed for photoshop if im being very technical with a photo and as a back up store of data and photos.

i was quite pleased when i discovered that vista was being quietly allowed to fall by the wayside and as the machine is ten years old and showing it mechanically an easy retirement seems fitting.

i have enough parts to keep the steampunk server or derivitive going for a long time so i dont think microsoft will get any more trade from me.when i get round to it im going to linux an even older lappy as a portable pooter (and then when i get round to more tinkering do the portable linux etc from a memory stick so all i need is a tiny dongle and a usb port attached to the web in some fashion via a pooter of some sort and a secure cloud storage box for any data i might need on the go.) .phones can do most of the things i might want on the move but they are even worse than microsoft products in all the important ways.well the ones i could afford seem to be

Why is this a Microsoft rant? The problem, from your description, appears to be an Avast issue.

I've recently upgraded 3 machines from 7 to 10, which statistically speaking is insignificant, none of exhibited this trait and all have updated very smoothly. The last two were a couple of Dells that are about 6 years old.

I'm sorry I can't offer any help on your problem but it does appear to be an odd one.

The shellshock exploit was nasty, and I don't think anyone should be complacent about Linux, but I think user experience tells a different story about which OS has most problems for users.
