starting from the premise that a ship nelson would have recognized often got it right i had a sartori regarding the classic G and T

fizzy is not needed was the first discovery
there have been others

a few basics, gin comes with many flavours
well balanced juniper and rhubarb and ginger are featured

over flavoured is nasty and some flavours just dont seem to work for grogs

i will refer to g and grg as required
a 400ml glass is ideal

basic grog

slice of citrus, lemon or lime will do
g or grg ( you will notice that this has no amounts but end up with around 5% alchohol is ok for a warm day)
lime cordial(use less with posh ones, it needs bite but you need to keep your teeth)
top up with the best water you have

that one is very adaptable

the next one is a bit more sophisticated

pt 1
fine slice enough lemons/limes to fill a jar
sift with light brown sugar(or similar)
pack jar
top up with g to the brim, seal, put in fridge, shake weekly

pt 2

make grog as above but using the jar contents and missing out the lime cordial
that is good

but pt2.1
half jar liquor half grg and a fresh citrus slice is rather nice

there are variations on those themes but start from there and play with it

pt 3
grapefruit juice and grg + water is rather nice

pt4 not grog but ace

strawberries, prep and divide into 2/3 vs 1/3

best ones slice fine
dress with brown sugar, salt, black pepper, good balsamic vinegar(it only needs a little)
put in glass, cover with a enough g and a lid in the fridge for 12 hrs

less good 2/3
blend with a little g, black mint
fridge 12 hrs

drinkies mix from that

1pt blended
2 pt grg
1pt strawberry g juices
dress with sliced strawberries, microfine lime slices and a pinch of freshly crushed black mint

that one is splendid, not grog, hardcore and delicious cocktail:wink:

tonic is so victorian:lol:

i kept it simple but you should get the theme

Why mix with gin?
Surely you want the flavours of what you are adding.
Just wondered, not criticizing :

the taste of the gin/s is vital to the mi

as is a suitable ethanol content

300 gm strawberries topped and trimmed(the odd bruise is not an issue)
1/2 tsp good balsamic
2 very heaped tsp dark brown sugar
flat dipped tsp nice honey
two , 6leaf black mint tips. not a lot but enough so use judgement
pinch of sea salt
juice of 1/4 lime

suitable jug and stick blender

cover fruit with ginger and rhubarb gin

pulp it

to serve

2 slices of nice lime, very thin

makes 2 decent size cocktails and at least one of your 5 a day

a refinement to the strawberry 2gins margarita

use honey rather than sugar, a mix of blackmint and spearmint in the blend, use half light ordinary and half rhubarb and ginger gin in the blend

dress with micro sliced lime and lightly crushed spearmint tips

a well yummy tweak, more complex and less one note at a time, it has a rhythm to the series of flavour patterns

this one is getting close to pro quality, my few weeks as a 'tail waiter/mixer was educational but not my recipe.

this one is R and D and getting closer to a classic

i can do a good shamalama at 6 am in whatever circumstances where that may be required:lol: or a very good something for before or after dinner with a variety of ingredients etc
these work for anytime, dilute by 1+2 for an afternoon "on the porch" or keep full strength(circa 20%vol)for a "tiny"cocktail for those "gatsby moments"

an earthy mix that would be one of 5 a day

blend a non euro cucumber to pulp
add gin
add a drop or two of Worcester sauce, a little horseradish and a bit of time, a few mins seems to work

simple and rather nice

I suppose for those of us that don't like gin, other beverages might work too as long as they weren't strong tasting.

vodka works in all of these, rum might be plausible but i cant stomach the stuff

i prefer them gin based

The only use I have for gin is to make sloe gin I am afraid. Not a great one for spirits, but quite like rum and liqueur brandy in my own brews, and whisky OK. Not really tried vodka, but mild taste I gather.

sorry about the double post but apocalypse cocktail was too depressing a venue for a jolly recipe


fresh pineapple(break into a blender jug)
teaspoon of honey per ring
enough ordinary gin to cover fruit(roughly equal volumes)

blend until a frothy smoothie(i use an industrial stick blender on 2/3 top speed)

simple, quick and amazingly nice, it will be around 20% vol so a cocktail rather than a grog

for pretty and an extra touch i recon a couple of palma violets or other edible flowers would be a nice dressing

i will be back and update this once i have played with "hot and spicy" as a minor tweak but the basic was quite a pleasing surprise inspired by a SPAR loss leader on pineapples(75p for a ripe big un is hard to resist)
