Hi everyone!

I'm looking for somewhere to rent that will really allow me to get stuck into growing my own food and the such.

Ideally I want a place that has possibly been used for downsizing already, but the landlord can't take care of it anymore.
Obviously, the river cottage is the most ideal kind of thing, but I can't exactly hope for that.

A landlord who wants someone to look after the house and the garden and even a couple of animals would be perfect.

If anyone knows of anyone who needs tenants in a property like this in Berkshire please do let me know!
We need it to be in the Reading, Wokingham, Sandhurst, Bracknell area.

Have you tried looking in "The Lady", Nichola. There are often adverts in there for people looking for someone to do a little bit of work on an estate, in exchange for a cottage. We used to do it - had a wonderful cottage, on a lovely little estate, in exchange for a few hours work a week (my OH had a full time job too, and the hours were fitted round it). The only problem was the owners were horrid so we only stuck it for a year

Possibly worth a look though if you can find a nice landlord.

The Lady is weekly and usually big Smiths etc will have it, but most local newsagents will order a copy in for you as they use the same wholesalers I believe. Comes out on Tuesdays I think.

Similar ads appear in Permaculture magazine so it might be worth visiting a large library and seeing what other appropriate publications they have that have classified sections. Permaculture's is online:

Tsk, terribly extravagant, staff. Obviously as good Downsizers we make our own. I'm a whizz with a Screwpull and TD doesn't half look fetching in tails and a pinstriped pinny.

Penny...I was a jeune fille au pair once upon a long ago...never got nuffink through the Lady though, I had to go through a special agency. Which probably doesn't come as a surprise

So was I!!

only once though - once was enough.

The chap was a film director, and I got to talk to famous people when they called for him - can't have been that famous though, as I can't remember any of their names now

You could try applying to be a tenant for the National Trust. But it might be too much.
