I sent my first ever lambs (seven) to slaughter on Tuesday, and asked for the skins back.
Well, I collected them on Thursday evening and (not knowing any better) left them in the car overnight, ready to salt the next day.
I tipped the first two out of the bag and was horrified to see that the heads and (broken) legs were still on.
Unable to do the deed myself, I persuaded my builder to do it. It wasn't so bad for him, as his father used to be a pig farmer, and he was regularly roped in to help with the slaughter/butchering.
Anyway, the heads and legs off, I promptly set about the task of salting the skins. (In a space that I had made that morning in the garage, as I hadn't realised that I would have to keep them for a while - I just thought that I would salt them and post them off straight away )
Unfortunately, I didn't have any details for the tanners until I had actually received the skins back, and didn't receive their instructions until Saturday morning.
Apparently, the skins should be salted as soon as they cool down and the legs and mask (including ears) should be removed.
I hope that I haven't spoiled them by salting them later, and by having had the whole head cut off at the neck.

And the moral of the story? Make sure you know what you are doing before you even attempt it!!!

OK, I'll try and do better next time, sorry

Hi Anna-Marie, I remember when my mum got her very first lot of lambs back from the butcher, years ago now, she made exactly the same mistake with the salt. The tanner was really snitty with her.

Hi Chez,
I haven't been in touch with the tanner yet, except for a quick telephone call.
They sounded alright, though - fingers crossed.

It's OK, Justme,
Heads were returned to slaughterman for disposal.
