Ok, I admit, I don't eat them. For some reason it makes me sick, not literally, but I can't stand it. Too soggy? I don't know.

But it doesn't mean that it's wasted. No. You can boil it and make juice to add to your cooking (risottos, baked fish, etc) It works amazingly.

If they're in good nick, I eat them. If not, I scrape them off.

I dry pretty near all the boletus I pick, I find that the flavour is then much improved. The pores of dried ones are nothing like as wet and nasty.

seems to depends of the species and the conditions. I picked up a slate bolete in dry condition which pores just got soggy and slimy on cooking, and a cep which pores were juts as good as the flesh.
