Took Sophie, my three year old lurcher bitch for a quick look around last night after some bunnies.Considering her lack of practice lately due to the large state of the moon and the saturated ground she did really well. We caught three in about 40 minutes so i decided to leave it at that as thats enough rabbit to eat in a week as my deep freeze is full of our beef at the minute(its a hard life, i know!)
Conditions for lamping last night were better than theyve been in a while, no moon and a fair wind but the ground is totally saturated which makes it hard work for the dog and all that squelching makes a lot of noise.
If it drys up a bit as its meant too then ill gaive Mia, my SalukiX youngster a run in the next few days. Its best to pick perfect nights conditions wise when bringing on a pup as its important to biuld up confidence.
I will put up some pictures of last nights catch later if i can find my camera or maybe ill put up some of some past nights.
Excellent bag - and all the more pleasing because it was your training that made it happen. I'm jealous - our Jack Russell just ain't ever going to get it!
Training is an ongoing thing with lurchers i think, however they should be retreiving and recalling well before they make there first journeys into the field. I personally never work a dog before its around 12 months old. Salukis are by far the most difficult dogs to train on the whole but i think this is because they have a superior natural hunting instinct over other lurchers. I would be happy to write an article on lurcher work if theres any interest in it. As long as ive got a lurcher, ill never starve
