Hopefully within the next 2 weeks we'll have a plan in with planning department for a new house.

For those that have been to ours we're rebuilding at the top of the field the existing house is in, this is about 15-20 mtrs higher and will be sheltered from the north by our woods.

The house itself will be earth sheltered to the north (this will be the front of the house) and the rear will have a large amount of glazing, this is S facing and we'll get a nice view of the surprisingly wooded areas out that way.

Construction will be concrete pads supporting timber columns supporting a sprayed concrete shell, the slab will be limecrete and this will be laid after the shell is up. There won't be any load bearing walls so all of them will be stud partition filled in with sprayed hemcrete.

The earth sheltering goes all the way up the N face and onto the roof, so form the front it'll look a bit like a tellytubby house, the back will look totally different.

Although there's a fair amount of concrete in the structure the house as it stands will (I'm told) emit something like 7kg CO2 annually, if we get consent for a wind turbine we'll go into negative figures.

No pics of anything yet, will keep you updated.

Best of luck, how did they come by this figure? And is it possible to work it out for our own houses?

Don't ask me, the man had a big (really big) spreadsheet with u values and blah-de-blah, he put in lots of values and came up with that figure.

I know that living in Essex you're not used to civility and culture, but trying to protect yourself from it...?

Best of luck to you, squire - sounds like a good structure. Had any advice about the limecrete?

What kind of advice? The architect and structural engineer were both worried about pouring a limecrete slab, that's why it's going to be done once the structure is in place.

I guess so, I just think it'll be a house that sits well in it's surroundings and will be designed sensibly.
