I have a question.

I've never done any rug making apart from when I was very little and my sister was in to making them with those bundles of cut wool and grids of matting, and she showed me what to do, but that's soooo expensive as to make it not worth while, surely? I like the look of Mochyn's because it's using up spares and scraps in a really nice way.

So my question is, I can see how the method works, but I don't quite understand what stops it from coming undone because the rags aren't attached to the hessian. Is it just because the fit is so tight, or is there something I'm missing?

Hmm. And have we got any hessian anywhere?

The strips of fabric are placed really close together, and hold each other in place. It creates a really firm, hardwearing fabric. If you make a rug, it shouldn't be washed, just hung over the washing line and given a good beating to remove dust.

Congratulations to Mochyn - Not only a lovely stool but a really good article. Mochyn has not only given clear instructions on how she achieved the finished item but has backed them up with some really clear photographs.

Thanks, all! Yes, the strips of rag just hold each other in place. It does sound as if it should come undone, I know, but it doesn't happen. I've seen some really old rugs made like this and still serviceable. There's another techniue, the proggie mat, which uses short strips with both ends showing: maybe that's one for a later date. (Damn, I've done it now: how do I stop bugs seeing that?)

As I've already said I really enjoyed reading it and it's definitely high on my list of things to have a go at; I was interested in it before but to hear about it straight from the horse's mouth (I mean that nicely!) is much more likely to get me started. So if you can bring yourself to do us any more they'll be hugely welcome - I could use about a year off work to make my way through all these projects though

Ditto here, Bugs: so many things I want to do, so little time.

I had thought of using the sacks that some veg. and peanuts come in: like hessian, but woven from very thin strips of some kind of plastic, but I tried standing on one and found it slippy underfoot. It wouls be hard-wearing, though, so I'm trying to find a way of de-slippifying it to make a rug base. I'll let you know if I find a way.

Probably the next project will be a smoker as the old chap's company is moving office and there will be a filing cabinet going spare. Then come the ducks, the pigs, perhaps my neighbour will have a caed lamb I can take on, veg and fruit to grow, jam to make, bread to bake.....................................................

Could someone put up a picture, of what the tool looks like at the end? I saw some today in a sort of haphazard haberdashery and they seemed reasonable (I think �2)...they look like the hooks my sister used to use, to make rugs on a grid with little short bits of wool, I'm not going to do that but I would like to have a go at Mochyn's project some time in the autumn or winter.

Bugs: it's not quite like a rug hook, it has a shorter, fatter handle and the hook bit has no latch. I have a spare one if you'd like it... Swap?

Wow - that's a fab article. It's brill becasue you've got a ready made frame in the stool itself so it'll be nice and tight for hooking the fabric through. The only down side is that I want to make one now and I have a list as long as your arm already

And Stacey: thankyou (small bow). I'm in the middle of the summer rush: all the local show schedules have arrived and I'm in manic craft mode, making all sorts of things, testing cake recip[es, finding recipes for things I haven't got recipes for... And I've decided to enter for the Royal Welsh winter fair and next year's RW show, so it looks like there'll be no 'off' season this year! Don't know if the poor old chap will cope...
