There has been mention on the forum about our dark bees Apis mellifera mellifera. One of the ways of identifying them is the pattern of the veins on their wings, and their hair type.
I belong to The Bee Improvement and Bee Breeders Assn., one of whose aims is to conserve and restore our own bees. You may like to visit www.bibba.com and read more about their work.
With all the imported bees coming here to supply the recent demand for colonies, it is even more important to make sure our own don't become as rare as red squirrels, or worse......

Sorry Nick, I haven't taken any pics of bees, I'm just flagging up this Assn., and I'm just a member, not an expert.
I think there might be some information, and graphs on their site, they can identify your bees for you, see info

I just took a sample of one of my hives to look at the wings and take the measurements recommened. I did this as they did look quite dark compared to some of the other hive I work with. Unfortunately the results show a hybrid trend toward carnica. Quite disappointing really but very interesting!
