What is it with these things, as a mum of boys the craze has only just filtered down, via my neices. But plaiting bits of plastic? Why? I love crafts but tell me why I should try this one out!

Er...you shouldn't? A friend whose boyfriend is a teacher brought in a confiscated one yesterday to show me what they are, as she said that they were a craze when we were at school too...I think it must have been a southern thing, we in the Midlands were too cold of finger to be fiddling around with that sort of nonsense.

The only thing I can see that might be a benefit is they could make a sturdy cord if you couldn't get the hang of Ray Mears' rope making instructions!

I suppose it teaches manual dexterity, concentration and useful skills like that. If you don't want to splash out on expensive plastic string, you could always use coloured bag ties!

i was thinking more string from the hardware store - it looks suspiciously like macrame for the 21st century - and about as useful, appols to those who still have macrame hanging plant holders from the 70's

I remember these from when I was at school, must have been late 70s/early 80s. You can do most of the twiddly things using the common rush, which is also a good way of practicing corn dolly techniques- so you could perhaps suggest that to any small kids that are obsessed if you have lots of rushes growing nearby

I have the answer ! My daughter has made yards of them ! She attached one end to a key ring, and gave it to me ! ( ah bless) Sort of a modrn day "corn dolly" Dave

Hi folks...(newie here)
My Eldest daughter is crazy about doing them...the question was asked.."what do they do with them"....well what she does is....sit twiddling with one, until she has about three inches of pattend bit.....then leaves it for me to trip on, kneel on, sit on, find, move, hide....etc.....then she makes another......the same thing happeneds...then makes another...etc...etc.....so, coming from a rather relaxed mum....ahhhhh, what am I supposed to do with them?...I haven't the heart to get rid of them....(reduce, reuse recycle)....I've got loads of the blimmin things hanging about...any ideas???
