So, our poor percheron, Jacob has had an infection in his foot and has been on antibiotics and painkillers. Does anyone know if it is still OK to use his poo in the manure heap whichnis destined, in time, for our organic veg garden?
A heavy horse produces quite a lot of the stuff which is great under normal circumstances!

How long do you compost it for, and how hot does it get?

If you have a good active compost and give it enough time the antibiotics should be gone

In short, the more active the composting, and the longer the curing time, the less of a chance you'll find any antibiotics making it through.
And as noted in the second link, some of the organisms in the compost will make their own antibiotics (which no one worries about)

Thanks Slim!
We can leave it as long as it needs because as you may imagine, we have quantities of the stuff. And it does heat up. We have a metal rod in the heap and it gets very hot at times.
