Having forgotten to add coriander to a seed order and unable to buy from a garden centre, I'm tempted to follow the RHS advice contained in an email last week:

Has anyone on here sown coriander seeds from their spice rack???

It should be fine, though you may get a variety that's been bred for seed and not leaf. The big what-if is how old the seed is and how it's been stored. You may have reduced germination or totally dead seed. The only harm in trying is potentially wasted coriander.

Also it almost goes without saying that you need whole seed, not ground (I'm sure someone will try and be disappointed)

My mum used to plant so much coriander that it wasn’t practical to use seed packets, she just used packs sold for spice

Yes it's seeds - ha ha - and I actually bought it just a couple of month ago (unlike some of the spices in my spice rack . There's only one way to find out, isn't there!

yep i have used kilo bags as green manure( and swapped the spare crop for goose eggs )

Put 20 seeds on a damp kitchen towel and fold it over. Put it in something like a lidded takeaway pot and wait to see if they sprout. It's a good way to test the viability.

Update! 3 weeks in and a no show for the spice rack seeds...have given in and made another seed order, funny how my list grew way beyond coriander -

I must admit I haven't grown it for years (no veg plot) but something that mum and dad used to do was just crack the seed casing before sowing so that's what I used to do. I did occasionally buy seed packets for varieties that were supposedly less prone to bolting but always went back to grocery store stuff as we used to harvest the seeds for spice use anyway

Seeds are sneaky things. They invade one's thought process with visions of a bountiful harvest and the brainwashing starts....
