i have been given an old BSA Airsporter .22 air rifle which has no rail to mount a scope on!
Is it possible to machine a rail into the gun? or is there another way of mounting a scope?

If a machined rail is possible, would i need to dismantle the gun before machining? if so is this an easy job

laser sight screwed strapped or glued on somewhere ?
open sights should be ok at the close range the weapon is good for , a 30 yd head shot to bunny should be ok but try the terminal balistics in an old phone book , start inside the gun if it does less than an inch
if it has seen a lot of use or has been stored a time then strip down , clean n polish and re build may be a good idea
solid old beast though
iirc under legal at best
(i await correction )

The first pigeon I ever shot was with an Airsporter (with iron sights).
There's an exploded diagram and parts list for early models here.
The model number will be visible when you pull the cocking lever down. Contact BSA at https://www.bsaguns.co.uk/ to see if they can recommend an after-market fitting for a scope.

I doubt you'll get much joy from BSA. They're owned by GAMO of spain now, and their customer service department has been depleted. BSA are more interested in pushing new sales, not helping you with something purchased aeons ago, unfortunately.

Doe it have fixed open sights? If so, learn to shoot with them. Even with an air rifle at 12ft/lbs, you should never be shooting at a living creature more than 25 metres away, and that's easy stuff with open sights. It'll give you a real appreciation of pellet ballistics and the limitations of air rifles in general. Most people I know who have trouble hitting what they shoot at, even with a good 'scope, are like that because they've never shot open sights. I see it as a very necessary step to learning how to shoot.

If you find a good gunsmith, they can machine cut dovetails into the cylindar to take scope mounts. But tbh, if you find a 'smith good enough to do that, it'll probably cost you a fair few quid. Maybe best buying a new one that's pre-cut for a scope. Check out the lightning from BSA - best value for money on the market imo.

Many thanks for all the advice.
I'll have a go at stripping and cleaning.
