upsidedowner feral pigs

as invasive species go, pigs must be in the top ten in most landscapes humans can also survive in

systematic actions might rid a few areas of them,

in areas without such programs, a high level of responsible mom and pop hunting might keep the breeding rate lower than it could be, especially if "eradication" rather than harvest targetting policy is applied, ie shoot breeding age females first, ugly but the best way to get rid of invasive mammals

death from above has assorted options, a chinook would be a good platform, plenty of sensors +pignuts + ammo+ mini gun

an A team with stealth and pignuts and then forward air control with an F16 and brimstones to do the deed might be less than cost-effective

barry out of a cessna window with a rifle might be rather slower than piggy reproduction

to do it properly and totally would be very expensive and possibly impossable
best scenario is to reduce them by whatever works in that area to numbers that have a fairly minor impact for a start, and then go after the legacy populations

the python hunters of florida use tracking and mutts to find them, the folk pop em in a sack, and get paid by the foot
it looks like a living more than eradication, not by intent but just cos they can only catch a few a day and there are "fousands of em"happily breeding in the swamps

a while back i was tempted to remove 2 mink from the environment, further tracking indicated they would have been replaced within a year by youngsters from neighbouring territories, i let them do mink stuff, we have them best get used to them

Invasive species are a real problem. Even native species spreading out of control because of changes in environment can cause untold damage. When son was at college, they went to Wales for a week on a field trip and the locals were asking the students about deer control as they had never had a problem before, but now deer were spreading into the area. The numbers in the south of England are far higher now than they were 50 years ago so coppice needs fencing of it won't survive.

As the top predators are no longer with us, or introduced species such as the pig in Australia are present, I am afraid there is no alternative but for man to play the top predator and control them. With things like deer and pigs, it also makes sense to use the meat rather than just kill the animal and leave it.

I agree with you Dpack that reducing the females is the way to go; without the females there are no young.
