I would be most grateful if i could have some help in identifying the fungi in the photo. i think it might be some sort of puffball but im not sure. and is it edible.

its pale yellow inside and smells like a mushroom. i.e. no distinct smell

lycoperdum pyriforme,but when it cuts yellow and not pure white,not to be eaten.

thanks for that but all the photos of lycoperdum pyriforme seem to shown round tops where these are slightly pointed???

when young and fresh they don't have the point ,it develops as they are about to spore as is the case with your specimens; the point is the bit which opens and the rain hits to disperse the spores from the sack.

Was it growing on a stump?

yes they were growing on a stump. I'll check it out again and see if there are any that are white inside and less developed.

I doubt you will find any. You need to catch these very young - younger than most puffballs.
