Just got this from there:

Tesco The Snowman cakes recalled
Monday, 20 December 2004
An updated Food Alert for Information has been published by the Food Standards Agency after further problems were found with Tesco's own-brand Snowman cakes.

Food authorities were advised in Food Alert 70/2004 of a product recall of Tesco own brand Snowman Iced Jam Tarts due to plastic backing adhering to the snowman plaque and causing a potential choking hazard.

Now Tesco has extended its product recall to:

* Tesco The Snowman fairy cakes

* Tesco Snowman chocolate fairy cakes

This recall affects all date codes up to and including 'best before' 8 February 2005.

Tesco are taking this action as the snowman plaques on a small number of fairy cakes still have the plastic backing attached and this may present a choking hazard. Tesco will be putting up notices in its stores to alert customers to the recall.

Another thing to watch out for is different types of food sold together, like raw and cooked meat, for example.

After looking into this in some detail it is obvious that setting up a food business from your kitchen is a non-starter.

I may look at writing an article surounding the rules from the Environmental Health department, but in my opinion you need premises that have been specifically built or designed for the purpose.

Much better is to do what MrsNesbitt does and use a local village hall. This way, they are responsible for obtaining all the certificates etc. Obviously you are still responsible for maintaing good levels of hygene, but for the most part this is common sense.

One important area to consider is the storing and transportation of food. Things like avoiding cross-contamination of raw and cooked meats, keeping perishable items stored at the correct temperatures and ensuring that when food is transported it is kept at the correct temperature and not contaminated en-route (nobody wants to buy food that stinks of diesel fumes.

Once you have got around the preparation of food, actually selling your produce is subject to less restrictions. Normally there are few restrictions on labelling of foods, but you must make sure that you describe food in an honest and accurate manner. Also if you food contains any ingredients that have been irradiated or genetically modifed you must put this on the label. Products such as burgers and sausages must have the minimum meat content listed.

If food is sold unpackaged there must be handwashing facilities - and this includes fruit and veg! There must be screens to protect customers from areas where food is cooked.

If you plan to sell alcohol you (obviously) need to be licenced to do so.

You local EH Officers can help you with all of this, and you can also get advice from the organisers of farmers markets.

There is a basic food hygiene course which will earn you brownie points....farmer's markets are grnerally full due to their popularity this is why I posted last week on farmer's Markets. they only have 1 preserve stall up here.....my local butcher is going to stock my stuff and a local organic farmer is going to do the same. Love my chutney club, keeps me in touch with my customers!

Thanks Tahir, my Christmas stuff has been going really well, especialy the savoury cranberry preserve.pickled onions & picalilli too. 3 pink pickle.onion, beetroot & cabbage really popular. Sadly sent some and it was smashed.............................! Dx

Yes, and I see they only cost about �30.
