At last what I think are Jew's Ears have appeared in our garden again. I'm pretty certain they are as I've looked them up in various books and used that handy Top 10 article.

They are growing on a very old Buddleia bush stump and I also found some on a Laburnam branch.

I might try the ones from the Buddleia, not sure about the Laburnam ones. I've a couple of pics so if anyone thinks they are something else please shout.

They are young ones, they make a good picture. I like the one on the left in the last pic, it's exactly like an ear. A fraction large but just like one.

Pretty pictures. Are you planning to eat the fungus?

I will try the two in the bottom pic. I'm not sure about the Laburnam ones so I'll leave those on the twig.

The two I'll try smell mushroomy with a strong sharp smell. I love the dried Oriental Wooden-Ears.

There doesn't seem to be anything dodgy that looks anything like these so I should be fine.

Treacodactyl, give them a good tug between your fingers, make sure they're elastic-y, sort of stretchy rather than beign tearable. Then you can't easily go wrong.

I've never heard of a case of poisoning from eating these shrooms from the wrong trees, but I entirely see why you'd choose not to eat them off laburnum. Wouldn't fancy that myself either!

Well, I've tried pic 4. Very nice taste and great texture, a little tough because they were a little old and had been kept a day. If I'm still around I'll keep an eye out for more. Definately worth eating.

It was a bit easier for me as they were only half way up our garden.

They've grown in the same place for several years and seem to spread in the area. Now I know they are good to eat I'll try and encourage some more for next year.

I wouldn't eat the ones from laburnum -- the wood has a reputation of being pretty poisonous
