Just candled 58 eggs due to hatch 23/7.
Mixed lot of Light Sussex, Cuckoo Marans, Buff Sussex, Welsummers, Ixworth & Salmon Faveroles.
Couldn't get enough light penetration through the Marans & Welsummers to be sure but of the 36 lighter coloured eggs I've only one clear so looking good so far.

45 hatched, all bought in eggs, the cuckoo marans failed completely so someone's cock is firing blanks & one looks like it might be a mongrel but I'm not complaining as they where cheaper to buy than free range eggs in the supermarket.

Fantastic

My last hatch of the year hatched on Friday - Exchqeuer Leghorns.
Set 13 all fertile at a week. The hen broke 1 a couple of days later. 10 hatched. The 2 that didn't were covered in yolk from the broken one.

On the same day the first pullet from this years hatches came into lay at 18/19 weeks - a Barnvelder

Contrary to expectations, (new thermomenter also reads high - I'm wondering if he actually sent me the same one back!) and we've had two powercuts, so turning up the temp a tad hasn't really helped, but I've actually had four hatch from this last batch. There are two that I definitely want to keep (out of eight altogether) and possibly another two for Chez.

We have a broody sitting on 6 eggs. They were due (21 days) Sunday. They were candled and showed chicks in every egg.

Just started typing this as worrying that nothing has happened when granddaughter phoned to say one egg is cracked and she can hear cheeping (probably a bit of imagination here) so would seem that something is on the way!!

Di: if an egg has cracked I'd be surprised if she COULDN'T hear cheeping!

We can usually hear cheeping a couple of days before hatching, if you really listen out for it.

I still get frustrated that they aren't all OUT of the egg by the end of day 21, rather than just starting to hatch

We have two broody hens and as of today 2 chicks. The hens keep swapping nestboxes with each other. Is this normal?

Well its now day 25 and 2 chicks are hatched and out in the run with Mum. Should we now assume that the rest wont hatch? The 2 chicks were hatched yesterday and the day before.

They were candled about a week ago and all had chicks in them. However Mum has been out in the run for most of the morning with her 2 chicks so I think the other eggs would be cold by now. What do you experts think?

Well, we ended up with just the 2 chicks. When the other eggs were cracked 1 had a fully formed chick inside but it just hadn't hatched for some reason. The others were smelly!!

Mum and chicks doing well and at least if they are both cockerels it won't matter as I can have one with my hens and daughter will keep the other with hers.

VERY upset today - we put a dozen day olds under a broody last night. She seemed to accept them; but this morning she'd killed all but three of them. Including the only one out of a dozen salmon faverolles that I had bought in at an exorbitant price to get some new blood.
