Microgeneration Certification Scheme... Wot you need to be on to get FIT payments.

Regarding turbines in rivers, don t know if the legislation has changed with the push for Green energy, but one was charged for the use of the water running over a water wheel a good few years back, making it unviable.

Twaddle.
There is an abstraction charge, but compared to the amount of energy you can get it is peanuts.

wouldn't be on the grid anyway so no payments for spare energy anyway! So can i just get any old turbine?

On FIT you get paid for generating.

You only get a tiny bit back for selling back to the grid , 3p per 2 units, the FIT payment is 41p for every unit generated. Not to be sniffed at IMHO, if you are generating power.

Generation rate 43.3p per kWh
Export rate 3.3p per kWh

Export can either be metered so you get paid for all you dont use or it can be deemed so you get paid for 50% of what you produce.

Think you boys are thinking solar. Hydro power is only about 20p/kWh.

I think in an off grid system they'll assume export to be zero.

20 litres per second with a drop of 1metre will provide 200watts, double that for losses = 40 litres per sec over 1m fall, or 4 litres per sec over a 10 metre fall (if my maths is right).

Easy to say, but what does 20 litres per second look like in a stream?

Quite a small stream. I'd say about 4 or 5 hose pipes worth.

That's right as far I'm aware. You get paid FITs for installed capacity, you don't have to export to grid. It's certainly worth looking at.

Oops.

Yes with off grid you get no export at all. But to be honest who cares about the 3p when you are getting 43.3p?

I know I dont.

Er no you get banded by installed* capacity (for PV its 0-4kwp at one rate then 4-10kwp at a lower rate, higher amounts get even lower).

You get paid per kWh actually generated.

*Installed capacity is not as simple as it seems. The FIT wants one thing & the DNO (the grid) wants another. Some installers rate it on the value of the panels others on the inverters output capacity after system losses, or the lower of the two.

The some DNO's want no more than 16amps @230V (3680 watts) & other use 240v (3840watts). Over this limit they are allowed to charge you for test or upgrades. Some do some dont. Each case depends on the actual local grid you are connected too.

I still reckon its around 20p for hydro, but you're the expert, what do I know?

I was talking about me

I have no idea what the hydro rate is.

20.9p/kWh for system <15kW.
