There is currently a young wild rabbit on my lawn, that might have myxamatosis. I found it on the drive, eyes gummed shut, looked a little random walking. I bathed open its eyes and put it on the lawn. If it is still there later, and still in the same sort of shape, then the correct thing to do would be to put it down. However, never done that on a rabbit and no idea how.

I've found it easiest to whack them on the back of the hed with a priest / stout stick.

Hold it by the legs, underside facing away from you. Hold the head between your first & second fingers, pull downwards and at the same time rotate your wrist towards you (so that you're forcing the head back towards it's spine). It should snap fairly easily and you'll feel it 'give'.

That is easy to say, but how easily do you mean?
It strikes me as something you need enough confidence to do, and you don't want to mess it up.

I hold them by the back legs in one hand and knock them sharply on the back of the head where it joins the neck with the side of my other hand, held stiff.

I don't quite agree with that, I've witnessed fools try to bludgeon a bunny to death with limited success, never underestimate a fool.
