I wonder if First Steps is doing remarkably well considering it's hardly a page turner, because it's full of references like HFW, Seymour, what not? If so it might be worth making a point of including relevant reading lists in every article?

The one that I find amazing is Sarah's knitting ad, it's tucked away in trading post and has still had almost 200 hits Obviously a pent up demand for personalised knitting services...

How does this work? ie over a period of time etc. what factors comeinto the equation? My article on keeping geese is just below my Living Memorials.yet it is quite recent....

At the moment it's just total hits since the site's been going, we need to analyse the data by week or month if we're going to keep up with the top 30 etc.

It is one of the reasons for posting it, so we have some sort of record, that could be put in a spreadsheet if anyone wants to make the effort.

At the moment the major factor is the "Popular Articles" listing on the frontpage, but this will look stupid as winter ends and Cabs article is still getting pride of place on the front page.

ANything is technically possible

The question is always one of:

effort v worth

I could knock up a simple script to help import the data to a spreadsheet/database in an hour or three.

I could modify Mambo to track monthly hits. Which might sound more complicated, but would I think actually be quicker and much more powerful.

I could wait for someone else to code it for Mambo, all sites face the same sort of issue, sooner or later someone will do this.

Or we could drop "Most Popular" in favour of "Editors Choice".

I think Editors Choice is a good idea because we can then "bring back" topical items or items that we think didn't get a good enough airing first time round. Still think we need proper reporting but we should wait and see what the mambo comunity comes up with.

Editors choice is also my preferance. A computer programme may be dispassionate and avoid sour grapes if your own article ain't featured, but it can never make intelligent choices, and that is what I think we need.
