It's just a consultation at the moment, charges are proposed to be introduced next year.

You can argue any side, of course. People are catching these and selling them on, presumably making reasonable money from it. Clearly, they're all paying full tax on these, but is it unreasonable to try and monitor the numbers of this invasive species, study their progress, establish who and why is catching them, and both make a charge for the cost of doing this, and recoup some of the tax payers' money?

�40 won't buy much, and seems a bargain for a year of unlimited fishing rights, if you like crayfish.

If you look at the document the charging structure doesn't seem that fair, hopefully it'll change before it's introduced. Current proposals means someone with one trap fishing a couple of times a year would pay the same as someone with 10 traps fishing every day. At least they do charge more for traps in excess of 10, but �70 for 20 or �160 for 500 still doesn't make �60 for 1 sound good value.

True enough, depends if it's an admin charge, or a quota based charge. I guess that's why it's a consultation.

It's for any methods other than a 'rod and line'.

The charging structure does have varying fairness, I grant you, but it's not �60 for one; it's �40 for up to ten next year, rising to �60 for up to ten in 2014. These are for a whole year's fishing.

I guess they have to have a minimum charge, to cover the admin costs, and that's always going to hit the low end.

Still, it's open for consultation until 21st October, so we have a chance to have our say.

i'm happy with string and garden cane to give myself a free meal one a week. if i can dangle it now and again when i'm out for a walk by the river. not in it to make money.

Last I checked, a license is required to trap, and this is largely to protect otters, etc from accidental entrapment.
If you catch them without a trap, you don't need the license.
