All those rabbits were taken by lamping at night - the rabbits leave the burrows under cover of darkness to feed, the worse the weather the further they travel away ( wind and rain is ideal), when you shine a light on them some run others squat, the dogs run down the beam of light pick the rabbit up and bring it back to hand - alive, for this you need a soft mouthed dog otherwise the meat is spoiled - easy , all you do then is dispatch , dress and eat !! a good dog such as the brindle bitch( collie /greyhound bred) in the photograph can pick up as many as 60 in an evening, at least with a dog the rabbit gets a sporting chance and there is no fear of wounding your quarry and the poor thing crawling off to die in agony. |
Whats the reasoning behind you saying that the worse the weather the further the rabbits travel away from their burrows? Thats simply not the case. In over forty years of lamping and many thousands of rabbits accounted for I've found that rabbits don't travel further away from home in inclement weather. Infact, I find the opposite applies and that extremely bad weather means that fewer rabbits are about. What in reality happens, is that windy weather actually prevents the rabbits from hearing your approach, so that they you are more likely to get closer to them. Dark noisy windy nights are the nights to go out lamping. If you fancy a good drenching, thats totally upto you. |
