Hi,

We have a lurcher who is around 10 years old. Today on ( on our own land) she caught a muntjac deer and pretty much killed it. My husband heard the noise and came to investigate and decided that the animal was very near death but that it would be kinder to end it quickly so he did.
My dog has only ever brought down one rabbit in the past so this was a huge surprise to us. My husband is a veggi and quite upset by the whole thing but also worried in case he has in any way broken the law. I have reassured him that he hasn't but wanted to double check.

You're allowed to shoot muntjac so I can't see what he might have done wrong.

In the circumstances killing the thing was the only sensible thing to do. Shame he's a veggie, they're supposed to be proper tasty

He has done the best thing he could, I really can't see what he might have done wrong. You don't need to remove the post

I think what vegplot means is you have done nothing wrong but members of the local community can blow things up out of all proportion so I wouldn't go telling Tue story down the pub or in the post office, a lot of people think deer are cute little bambi who do no harm so must be protected by law but that's not the case, everything is fine.

Okay, thank you. Poor old chap he is very shaken. Nope, don't worry we won't be telling the village, just wonder if the neighbours heard the rumpus because apparently it was very loud.

Oh dear - must have been very distressing. The only other thing I would say is be very careful with the dog off lead in future in case of a repeat performance (another deer or even sheep would be my worry).

I would never trust my dog within sight of sheep unless she is on a lead, or cows come to that.
She does have a high chase instinct but has never converted that into bringing things down before. She was sat on the tail of a rabbit in chase and just 'enjoyed' the chase. Not that the rabbit enjoyed it. She has been set on squirrels who have given her a bloodied tail, all in all I never really had her down as a hunter. But she is Saluki/Grey x Whippet so it's all there in her genes I guess.

Yeah, if it's 'in them' there's not an awful lot you can do, esp. with a 10 year old.

There's a chance that the muntjac might have been sick -possibly why your dog's killer instinct got activated? a healthy animal would've likely got away.

I wondered that as the only rabbit she's brought down was a mixi one.

I had a friend who had a collie and a Jack Russell they managed to take down a red deer stag in the highlands. They had escaped from the house and returned covered in blood, my friend finally found a mortally wounded stag trapped in a gully, not a pretty sight, by all accounts.
