DEFRA ANNOUNCE RENEWAL OF GRANTS TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE LIVING
Environment Minister Elliot Morley has today confirmed over 2 million pounds worth of funding to support projects looking at sustainable living.
Over 35 projects from voluntary groups across England are set to benefit from continued funding from Defra's Environmental Action Fund.
Among the projects being funded:
* BabyGROE's free information service that promotes the use of natural baby care products/services, which are environmentally sustainable
* The Association of Charity Shop's pilot campaign 'Choose2Reuse' which will encourage residents in the East of England to donate more stuff to charity shops rather than throwing it away
* The Bioregional Development Group's One Planet Products project, a buyers' group for developers, housing associations and the construction industry which will make it easier and more cost effective to choose sustainable building products in new build and refurbishment
Full details of today's funding along with further information on the projects being supported is available at https://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/eaf/index.htm
Announcing the grants Elliot Morley said:
"I am very pleased to continue supporting Voluntary and Community Sector groups under the Environmental Action Fund.
"Sustainable consumption and production is a key priority for Defra and this work will help to show and facilitate sustainable choices into people's everyday lives.
"Good progress has been made in this first year of these projects and I am confident the programme will make a valuable contribution in helping to influence change within local communities."
Among the achievements following the first year of funding, the Sponge Sustainability Network have published a report as part of their project to research, compile and disseminate a case that building more sustainable homes encourages sustainable lifestyles.
And the Green Blue, an EAF-funded project which is being jointly developed by the British Marine Federation and the Royal Yachting Association, have published a new green guide for boaters. The project aims to promote good environmental practice through the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by watersports participants and the sustainable operation of the recreational marine industry.
Notes for editors
1. The Environmental Action Fund (EAF) helps voluntary groups in England promote sustainable development through projects on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP).
2. Grants range from 25,000 to 250,000 per year and applications were sought for 3-year projects starting in April 2005. Groups must find eligible matching funding and ensure that the projects have well defined objectives, measurable outcomes and clear timescales.
3. Resources currently available to the EAF have been fully allocated for the 2005-08 period. To register for information on possible future grant rounds see the EAF pages on the Defra website above. Also available are an EAF annual report, 6-monthly magazine and good practice guide for environmental projects.
