We have just replaced our GU10s with LEDs.
Originally we had bog standard 50w which we replaced with 11w energy saving things. Suffered them for 4 years- total nightmare , took about 20mins to warm up.
Today I put in 5w LEDs from IKEA. 5.99 each. Fantastic and bright enough.

I bought one to try out first, then went back and got more as I've been caught out in the past with rubbish ones. Had to wait a couple of months til we were back that way as we don't live near Ikea.

I replaced my Halogens with LEDs, and am more than happy with them. I went with 6W replacements for 50W halogens. I bought them from here which works out just under 10 each.

The best thing about them is the colour ... daylight (cool) white rather than yellow.

Apparently, there are LEDs and there are LEDs. Seems that advice is to stick with good chipset makes, higher wattages (not the 2 or 3W shops tend to sell).

And make sure you choose the colour you want ... warm (slight yellow tinge) or cool (daylight white). Shops tend to only sell warm ones. You can google sites that show side-by-side images lit by both warm and cool bulbs for comparison.

We are 95% lit by LED now (two bathroom type sealed fittings have CFL's). We bought a box of 50 (not all in use some are spares) 3watt GU10's of eBay direct from china.

They have been in use now for over a year & we have only had two fail & that was almost as soon as they were fitted. We went for a warmer white rather than the clinical white ones. You will need to up the number of fittings and or get used to a lower level of lighting. They do have a very directional beam but again you can get narrow & wide focus types.

If we put every single light on, our total lighting load would be less than 130watts.

The bulbs have arrived and are installed.
Comments: slightly (slightly) less light than the Halogen bulbs, BUT....
am I glad we changed them........

When removing the Halogen lamps as usual we get a downpour of dead flies (who must be attracted to the heat the Halogens give off), but this time, one of the bulbs has scorched the casing of the fitting....so changing these has probably prevented a possible fire.

Bulbs arrived quickly and by 1st class mail. Would use again.

Just an update on those bulbs - we have so far replaced at least 3 ....although as John never chucks anything and has kept all the boxes (which have large red crosses on the top) I suspect it may be all of them. Personally, I havnt been impressed - they seem to have lasted around the same time or less than the ones we replaced.

We had 6 50w halogens in our kitchen. Replaced them with Lidl's 3w LEDs @ 4.50 each. Have been well impressed so far, much brighter than the halogens.
Only been in for couple of months, but well worth it so far.

Shouldn't be failing that many early Lorraine except by manufacturers fault. Always the advantage of buying them from Ikea is if you'd had that many duffers you could take them straight back.
In their operation you shouldn't have to replace them due to 'going pop' like halogen bulbs, they don't work that way. In the long term we'll have to wait for you and Jema to report on if they get dimmer like flourescents. Again, they don't work like that either, so it'll be interesting to see.
In terms of how pro versions of the kit, I've used 5 year old kit and it's been as bright as I expected from it. So here's hoping eh?

They dont pop, they sort of licker and this gets really annoying and so we replace.
John thinks its to do with switching the lights on and off a lot as people enter/leave the kitchen.

Have to say not terribly impressed.

Re Ikea - I see they are soon to open a store in Exeter which will suit me, but till then, Bristol is a bit of a jaunt.

we had that happen with one of our bulbs - we complained and they sent another that day. the rest are just fine and I no longer need a torch to see into the marmalade pan!
