Any chance that they will root at this time of year?

I don't see why not. In years gone by we've used willow as pea sticks and after the peas have finished, seen that our pea sticks had put down roots. Obviously, via the peas they'd been well watered.

Try to stop them. You do realise that once you have willow you have it, and there isn't much chance of going back without a major operation to clear it.

If you can keep them moist they should root ok.
I would root them in pots near to the water & then plant them out in the Autumn.

Chez, I do know one place they died. A whole load were planted on a site that was wet in winter but dry in summer and they died as they were summer planted.
