We've had a small legacy and I've decided to spend my little bit on bees. When is the best time of year to get a hive/swarm etc?

June swarms are often said to be the best, but no reason why not to get the hive and suit now so you have time to get used to opening and shutting it, practice lighting the smoker, work out where to site it etc, then put the word out with your nearest beekeepers assocuation that you want a swarm and one will usually materialise at the right time.

Sally: you've just confirmed what I was thinking. I'll be seeing a couple of local beekeepers this evening at the gardening club, so here goes for the next livestock adventure!

Wow Mochyn what fun - I will keep bees one day - I often see swarms around here and one visits my mums attic far too often for her liking. Does it just start with a swarm like that - no don't answer that one - I am not going to get involved for several years yet. (And then I shall book you for lessons!) PS Saw an ad in the food store for Tamworth piglets �25 - have you got one yet?

Blimey, Ruby: I've always thought it was only birds that went cheep! Never heard of Tamworths for that price. Could you send me the number? Don't suppose you know the owner? Found out last night that our local beekeepers are having their AGM next week so I'll be asking for kit there. Getting excited now...
