Am I being dim?

I'm at the end of wires strung between poles. That can't be fibre, can it? Assuming that's copper, isn't that always going to limit my speed? Zen and BT assure me I can have fibre however, and super fast speeds, etc.

Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) still uses your copper phone cable and can give you speed up to 76 Mbps it seems. https://www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/what-is-fibre-broadband

Two flavours: Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). At the office we have FTTC and varies from around 30 - 70Mbps for a ï¿½1 a day. Copper will always be limiting but only at higher capacities. Ethernet is over copper at 100Mbps.

I have 400mtrs of fibre to cab then 400 mtrs of copper to house and get down 69.48mb/s and up 18.25 mb/s all with BT

Ok thanks. Worth knowing. We're on a similar length of cable banging in the wind and trees. I've ordered infinity, but am expecting the worst. We shall see.

Its 11 years since I left BT but the figure of 5.8 km of 0.5mm diam copper sticks in my mind for bb to work but obviously things have moved on. I'm pretty sure you don't get anything like the losses on fibre compared to copper so I wouldn't dismiss it. I think BT can check what will work before you buy.

According to BT the cabinet is "fibre enabled" but there's no current plan to bring fibre down to us. How do I get hold of a knowledgable human at BT with whom to discuss this?

I wouldn't be that bothered but our bb is absolutely dire, we are lucky to get 1.5mb dl speed, 2 miles from the middle of Billericay.

Report a fault. When the engineer turns up to pole the cabinet about ask him. The guys on the ground round here know the hardware very well.

I would think they would use your existing copper feed from the cab. To get info on the tech side of things you would do best to ask an BT open world engineer in the street as they hopefully know the local area.

If they don't find a fault or its in customers own wiring BT charge ï¿½125 for the first 30 mins!!

Yeah they do. Round here the automated fault detection system finds a fault every time I fire it up. They've 'fixed' it six times in the last two months. And I've been away four weeks.
