If Ayrshire is out of normal area for this, I've just been given a piece of furniture by a friend in Abergavenny...and he had bought it in a house clearance in South West Wales.....

I think it's a Herald (Scoliopteryx libatrix). One of the species that hibernates as an adult. Used to find them a lot in caves and mines when I was looking for bats.
