My village have set up a community fridge - to share food on or over its bb dates and share surplus. Donations come mostly from the supermarket and some businesses, and surplus from allotments and gardens.
Such a good idea - I know they are all over the place now. I popped my head in just before Christmas and came away with a punnet each of tomatoes and grapes. What a treat - we wouldn't have either of these at this time of year.. out of season so from far away. But different when it is a matter of take them or waste them. Something a bit messed up about having lovely grapes when I normally refuse to buy them out of season, because other people will buy them out of season, only it turns out they didn't so they would be thrown out.......

A good idea Nicky. I am afraid I buy out of season fruit as I just can't eat apples through the winter, so have to have dried fruit and things like clemantine oranges and grapes.

I have never been quite sure about the use of community fridges and gardens; are they only for people to take if they are in real need, or can anyone take things that are there if they will go off?

It depends on the individual "fridge" - near me there is a "food hub" that explicitly says it is for everyone, and takes donations if you are able to. I believe that "food banks" need a referral though?

yeh same here - this is different to food banks, the idea of this is just to avoid food waste so anyone can take, and they make it clear it is available to anyone.
In a way it is an extension of what happens in the village anyway - people put out boxes of courgettes begging people to take them, I seem to supply the entire village with cooking apples that I offer for free in a box out front, the other day I came home from a walk with some fresh rosemary that someone had left with a sign outside their home. This is just a step up, the village hall have agreed to cover the cost of running a fridge, and a team collect things from the local shops.

Thanks. We have a community orchard, and I have always wondered. The idea of putting in stuff you can't use as well as taking stuff is a good idea. In our village there are various people put out gluts of apples, and others sell produce. I get my eggs from someone down the hill from me that puts them out at the end of their drive and you put the money in a box in return. There are also offers of outgrown clothes, toys etc. on our local FB page. I have to put an ad in to get rid of loads of jars I have accumulated over the years. I make jam, but you only need so many jars.
