I wouldn't discourage anyone who is decent from advertising here, just providing the balance does not tip & turn us into a 'directory' site.

Or be the responsibility of a contributor prepared to vouch & stake their own reputation on them?

Very tricky, neither Martin (ART) nor Ged (Chileseeds) are active members, both are decent fellas that are good traders

We broke with my idea that traders needed to be active members almost from the beginning of the site. We just quitely as I see it got pragmatic. As RobR says someones reputation still ends up on the line!

Who's we and my? The site still insists "All stories and services submitted must be linked to a forum where a members credibility can be judged." That is the line I and some others still stick to.

I seriously think we need to sit down and review our trader policy so we *all* know what we are doing and are about. Then we can amend the site details and FAQs to fit in.

I'm not against the idea of non-members advertising but I do wish we all follow the same guide lines.

I thought this was something that we were going to be discussing imminently?

Yep, but the outcome of that may mean this conversation is meaningless.

We is us as a site who broke that line from the start!

My is Me as I penned that text, as that is how I wanted it and at the time of writing I probably was the sites one member!

But it did not happen that way.

True. I think we should all agree to review the traders policy next week.

Thats right. Like I say lets thrash the policy out properly next week, we definitely need to have a consistent policy (or at least framework)

This really must get sorted, this is a jointly run site and what's displayed to everyone has to be assumed as correct. If you have decided to change something then it should be jointly agree upon and then the text amended before you start following a different policy. I've been sticking to what we state as a site.

I don't think Jema did decide that the policy had changed, it just sort of happened that way. Best start a discussion in Staff Room TD.

That's more the question I was asking.

And hence my question. If there's someone fits in with our ethos in nearly every other way, and one or more staff have traded with them for years... I dunno. That's why I asked.

Can we just leave this for a few days. I've had a lot of arguing recently, here and at work. Maybe we could agree to try to have a non-heated debate on the traders policy in the staffroom starting on Monday.

I reckon a person (or business) that wishes to advertise on the site should at least have an active roll in the discussions here. After all it isn't much to ask. If a party does not wish to join in the forums then what reason to they have to advertise in them? I myself would expect to have my ad removed after a prolonged period of inactivity here. With regards to people without internet access and not wishing to pursue it, then all the best to them for boycotting that which may be unethical but any ad placed would have to be verified by an existing member IMHO which brings me back to my original idea of "online business cards". Somebody else would host the ad which would entail them verifying the product or service and only then would a banner ad be available from the Downsizer site.
