My new beehive has arrived! It's flat-packed and comes complete with things like hat with veil and smock and an informative little book on beekeeping. I'll be getting the bees some time in May-June. So excited! The housework can wait...

I'd like to keep bees but have no idea how to start. Are they a lot of work?

where did you get your starter pack from? Our local association has someone who makes hives, and I am thinking of getting some from him. They also get group discount from thornes too

Enjoy your course GJ. We are having great fun on ours. OH and I were talking about the number of hives today, and we have decided the basic minimums we will need to start with so I am going to order it all this week!

Where are you buying your hives from Alison? Someone at another forum gave me the contact details of a place selling hives quite cheaply, here's the quote:

National hives in the flat (the normal way of getting the standard UK hive - you have to assemble it but it's pretty straightforward) are available from The Apiculture Centre, Lawn Rd, Ashleworth, Gloucester GL19 4SL, tel 07810 476 554, Email [email protected] for �36. Their ad in 'Beecraft' doesn't specify whether they're cedar or pine (I suspect the latter) but it sounds like pretty good value. They've got other equipment at good prices as well.

Just incase you want to check them out before you buy.

Oooooh lucky you. I'd love to keep bees and hope to one day as I'd rather use honey than sugar. Absolutely love honey, that is locally produced not supermarket bought, tastes very different. Becky

The ones I am getting are cedar. The BKA do not reccommend pine as they need treating, whereas the cedar ones do not.

I have also been keeping an eye on ebay as there seem to be a fair number of bee things on there at any one time
