Anybody tried this? It sounds a charming idea, but don't the sunflowers also need support (in our garden, I don't think I've yet grown them any taller than me!).

If you grow something like 'Russian Giant' and pinch them out at about 4 ft and grow a less vigorous variety such as 'Sunbright' (Thompson & Morgan) then you should be alright. Otherwise try climbing french beans such as 'Blue Lake' or 'Cobra', both of these can be grown up sweetcorn, especially the non F1 types.
