Is there an easy way to tell between, Summer and Autumn rasberries, as Ive been told that you should prune the summer type back to the ground and leave the autumn type grow on. (I have a mixture of both and cannot remember which is which).

Thanks
David

I made the mistake of planting Summer and Autumn raspberries next to each other. Books say Summer fruit on last seasons new growth and Autumn on this seasons but there didn't seem much difference to me with fruiting times and what wood to cut out.

It could have been because I had a late Summer and early Autumn so see what other people say.

after four years of experimenting I found that pruning to an unch of the soil once the new shhots have appeared works well for all my varieties. I've enjoyed plenty of harvesting throughtout the year

Summer fruiting grow berries on the canes produced in the previous year, so don't cut the new ones or you'll get no berries!. In late winter cut out the canes that fruited the previous summer.

Autumn types produce berries on the same years growth. Cut the canes back as suggested above to about an inch in late winter.

For both types in early spring give them a good top dressing of manure. If you can.
