So, the general consensus is that no one except me likes artex, I'll go stand in the corner with my head down shall I. Or I'll just gaze up at my lovely artex, yes that's what I'll do. Oooh, it's lovely

Can't stand the stuff meself - particularly since I had a house where some bright spark had Artexed the khazi walls, turning the smallest room into a giant grater. Every time I stood up or sat down I stripped the skin off my elbows, causing inordinate amounts of pain and not a little swearing.
Faced with death by blood loss or constipation, I eventually took a rolling pin to the walls and knocked off all the little peaks, and then vowed never again to live with the stuff.
As far as I can see, the only use for Artex is to cover a bodged job on a ceiling, and certainly most builders I know feel the same way - see an Artex ceiling and immediately wonder what hell lies beneath!
Here in Wales one of the first ceilings to come down was a hideous swirly job - it was as if Mr Whippy had gone on 'dirty protest' in the Maze - and underneath was a cracked and knackered asbestos ceiling. Lovely.

Lovely I took down a lathe and plaster ceiling once, think it was the filthiest job I ever did I recall putting up a new plasterboard ceiling, but can't remember what else I did with it, may have been the dreaded artexing. jema

When we moved in our ceilings were covered in orange painted fibreboard

Were they like that when you looked at the house, or did the previous owners whip round putting it up once you'd exchanged contracts?

Do they run comedy classes in the chippy? They were like it when we viewed the place as was the hessian wallpaper throughout that was coated in a thick layer of fluff.

People do very strange things to houses. I can see (sort of), why someone might have thought hessian wallpaper was a good idea, but why would anyone look at a ceiling and go: "I know what that needs, some orange fibreboard." Sticking hardboard over wooden panelled doors was popular at one point too.

I used to go to a mates' house for drinky poos, and when half sozzled, had to negotiate a narrow stairwell, which was artexed floor to ceiling. I too suffered firs degree flesh wounds to the arms on many occasions. Hate the stuff.

one thing though, I put in a suspended ceiling in my last cottage, put up plaster boards, skimmed the joins, then painted with a thick textured paint and a coarse roller. If you are really insistent about the artex then you can use a textured roller for that, too, which is quick and easy.

we have stripped a few of them in our time, to reveal decent doors

Once looked round a house where there was nice brick "bar" in the lounge, lovely or would have been, if it was not the typical terraced house size lounge, which made the bar a monstrosity.

If you do go with artex, my shopping bag method is very cheap (FREE) and easy.

Still chipping away at the last remenants of the old ceiling other assorted crap, will finish this tommorrow and get in some joist type bits for new plasterboard. It has been complicated by the fact that the exsiting plaster board was a massive sheet covering 4 rooms

It is aslo slowed down by the fact that we have only the single bathroom, and having bought down a tonne of crap on my head, I feel the need to get the bathroom and me cleanish again

I will be well pleased when the filthy phase of this job is over.
