The calls I've made won't be charged, I'm fairly sure, but I'm getting more militant with them every time I talk to them.
Cheers for the advice everone. I'll keep you posted on where I get.
Well, I went into my branch at lunchtime. Found that they refused to take any responsibility for anything at all, and that the manager was quite aggressive; hardly surprising as he'd been totally misinformed as to what I was complaining about. Absolutely rubbish. Apparently because I'd refused to accept that the thirty quid offer from was appropriate, I was trying somehow to stitch more money out of the bank. The whole idea that it might not be about money but is really about customer services seemed totally lost on him.
I'm so going to pester them now. I am so angry at them. First time I've stormed out of anywhere in ages.

There's only one thing I would tell them- that I would take my custom elsewhere.
Personally, I like to open another bank account, use that for all my finances, wages etc, but leave the other one open with just pennies in it, in the hope that it will cost them more money to administer than they've ever made off me.
Not ethical at all, that, I'm afraid. But satisfying

As long as it's just a personal account- most effective
I keep getting leaflets from First Direct telling me how easy it is for me to put more of my money into the account- it hasn't occured to them that I haven't got any!

Excellent idea. I'll look into it. I'll also have a look to see if I can exploit my overdraft facility to top up my pitiful little isa elsewhere. That'll irritate them. If the interest rates are favourable that seems like a nice way to go about things.

Another bank rant.
I have just received a 3rd letter from goldfish with my PIN number. It may have been 4 I have received, but I am sure this is at least 3.
Since getting the 1st one last june or so, I have been using the damn thing. In fact the ship has bust twice and I have had to ask for a replacement card
