I needed a cable for my PC (SATA data with a 90 degree connector, to be precise) so I went to one of the large PC superstores on the way home from work.

They had shelves, literally, of strange light sticks and other gadgets for lighting up the inside of the PC (why???), but did they have any disk cables? Only for a floppy drive and none for any hard disks.

I even asked and confirmed they didn't have any. I could, however, have lit the inside of my PC just to illuminate the fact it didn't have a cable.

Luckily I went to a local store and managed to get something I can use. I also had a very enlightening chat about some of the modern PCs and brands.

I know where I'll go in future.

Its like supermarkets really, rows and rows of useless crap, with things you would not really regard as specialist not there at all.I have been despairing in Swindon on basic plumbing bits, flexible tap connectors took me three shops...

In a strange philosophical way it summed up supermarkets to me. There were just too many things on sale that no one needs and not many or not a large stock of essential items. Just like our local food supermarket that has tons of baked bread but is always running out of bread flour and yeast.

out of curiosity are you aware that asda will give you free fresh yeast on request (up to 2oz at a time) whenever you request it-saw the advert at their bakery the other day and it reminded me of my twenty years in another major supermarket when we used to do the same-can't remember why, maybe some local byelaw etc.

it is a useful one to remember that, we have done this quite a few times

could never actually "recommend" a trip to asda -would be quite amusing to buy nothing and only leave with free yeast-especially on a busy saturday afternoon

We've got a local independent PC shop which is excellent. Sells loads of second-hand/reconditioned stuff. Lends you a replacement for anything he's fixing for you. Highly recommended.

Need to find one of these again, I have used a couple in Swindon, but one way or another they both deteriorated in the quality of components they offered. One of them went through a couple of reincarnations and I'm suspicious that the place I current buy from is still linked

It was all a bit of a shame really, for a few years I was telling people, here is a small trader, with a good service ethic and better prices than the chains, and then you go through this slow cooling off, as people start reporting duff fans and other issues

until you find you simply cannot recommend them anymore
