First two of the year!! One of my favourite birds, simply roasted. trail in for me and then spread on toast, drawn for the missus.

Neither of use have tried the brains yet, maybe this time eh?

Sprog minor gets to carry 'the knocking bird' around the house, and then cry when it finally gets taken from him.

Haven't had a L/R in six months, and that was a pair of landing woodies.

Best taste ever !

We cook them (usually only one ) on a piece of string suspended over the fire and let the fat drip on to bread. Twiddle the string to make the bird turn for about three quarters of an hour.

One bird has enough taste to flavour the bread and feeds two.

We haven't had one this season though...

You don't need to hang a woodcock too long neither because it will get very gamey very quick. Snipe is even stronger!
