What hops varieties do people use for their beer?

I've just made a largish batch with a mix of Challenger, Fuggles and a few mysterious ones from the garden. I've tried single variety beers in the past but I tend to find a mix works better. I'm not sure if this is just pot luck, but I was wondering what other people use.

I have a Real Ale Drinkers Almanac that lists hops varieties used in commercial beers if anyone's interested, but the one I tried didn't turn out that well. Next step it to get some yeast from the brewery...

I use fuggles hops , which I grow in the garden - I planted four hop bines, which rapicly spread, and now have about eighteen, despite giving some roots away................
I do keep a stock of dried ones in the store room in case of failure/ not enough happening, so use them on occasion too.
I would like to find room for a couple more varieties next year as well.

I use Fuggles and Goldings. Ratio of about 3 parts Goldings to one part Fuggles... usually putting Fuggles in for only last 15 minutes of the boil.

Lowlander, I know it's a bit cheeky but do you have any spare Fuggles roots? Or do you know where I can pick up roots of commercial varieties? Many thanks.

I gave away loads of roots last year; as they grow by underground stolons, they were starting to creep about, so had some spare. If there are any going this spring/summer, I will post up here or in RC forum, but it'll be first come first served.
My original four bines came from Deacon's Nursery on the Isle of Wight, about 4.50 each I think.

I use Challenger for the boil, and then dry-hop with Fuggles or Goldings. Ah, the smell...!!!

Have you tried eating the shoots, I thought they can be eaten like asparagus?

I must keep an eye out for some plants, although they don't like our chalk much I may have to try them in a large tub.

Mrs L knows all about hops, I'm sure she'll be able to tell you more

(just realised you're quoting from Mrs L, I'm sure she has eaten them though)

I must say they are good, I'm lucky as I can visit their shop / wharehouse as it's quite near me.

When I have a bit more time I must try a few batches made up with different hops. I must also start to keep notes!

I'll also try the dry hopping again, how long do you leave them in?

I leave the hops in the fermenting bin until I rack off the beer, which seems enough time to give the the right fragrance.
