Well after a busy 4 weeks and a difficult verbal part of the exam I got through the Fireman course (still two years to do 80 hrs of training finishing with a written test). I found it a really good way to integrate into the community here, that and the local shooting club. Since I'm at home it's also a good way of improving the German.
